========================================================================= Readme File unix.txt Web-Based Enterprise Services Version 3.1 for Compaq Tru64 UNIX Systems 23 October 2000 ========================================================================= The information in this README is organized as follows: - Information and Updates - WEBES Introduction - WBEM - Compaq Analyze - CCAT - RCM - Service Cockpit ***Information and Updates*** Web-Based Enterprise Services (WEBES) is Compaq Services' web-based service delivery strategy. The WEBES kit is available on the application CD shipped with the operating system. You can also obtain a copy by contacting the Customer Support Center (CSC) or from your local Compaq authorized service provider. Please read the WEBES Installation Guide before installing the WEBES kit. ***WEBES Introduction*** WEBES provides a core of common service tool functionality across Compaq(R) product platforms. This core functionality includes the following: - Common analysis engine - Common information cross-operating system registry - Distributed messaging service for inter-process communication between tool services - Common interface to managed object information - Service Cockpit server This WEBES release enhances proactive fault notification to Compaq Services and integrates the component service tools listed below: - WEBES Common Components (WCC) V3.1 - Compaq Analyze V3.1 - Compaq Crash Analysis Tool (CCAT) V3.1 - Revision and Configuration Management (RCM) UniCensus V4.4.2 Future releases of WEBES will include: - A user interface with a common look and feel across all components, integrated with Compaq's Web-Based Enterprise Management (WBEM) capabilities - A common communications transport providing a secure service virtual private network (VPN) including encryption and inter-node service communication ***WBEM*** WEBES is an extension of Compaq's industry-leading WBEM technology. Compaq, along with BMC Software Inc., Cisco Systems Inc., Intel Corporation, and Microsoft Corporation have proposed an industry standard that allows administrators to use any web browser to manage disparate systems, networks, and applications. The WBEM standard enables the development of tools that reduce the complexity and costs of enterprise management. ***Compaq Analyze*** Compaq Analyze is a fault analysis utility designed to provide analysis for single error/fault events, as well as multiple event and complex analysis. Compaq Analyze provides system analysis that uses other error/fault data sources in addition to the traditional binary error log. Compaq Analyze provides background automatic analysis by monitoring the active error log and processing events as they occur. The events in the error log file are checked against the analysis rules. If one or more of the events in the error log file meets the conditions specified in the rules, the analysis engine collects the error data and creates a problem report containing a description of the problem and any corrective actions required. Once the problem report is created, it is distributed in accordance with the customer's notification preferences. ***CCAT*** Compaq Crash Analysis Tool (CCAT) helps service engineers and system managers analyze operating system failures. CCAT collects data that describes system crashes and matches that data against a set of operating system specific rules. This comparison determines if the footprint of the collected crash data matches any stored footprints for which a solution or corrective action is known. This capability significantly reduces customer downtime because it shortens the time required to analyze system crashes and eliminates the need to go to the customer site. CCAT provides a customizable local analysis rule library that reduces the volume of knowledge stored on customer systems by installing only the rules required for the customer's current operating system version. The architecture supports the implementation of CCAT solely on the customer's system, eliminating the need for a remote connection to a service provider host system in order to apply CCAT rules against a crash footprint. ***RCM*** The Revision and Configuration Management (RCM) tool collects configuration and revision data from AlphaServer(R) and Intel systems running Windows NT, Tru64(TM) UNIX, or OpenVMS(TM). The collected data is stored on an RCM Server at the service provider site, where it is used to create detailed revision and configuration reports. The following reports can be generated from the web-based user interface to the RCM Server: - Configuration report showing detailed hardware and software configuration - Change report showing configuration or revision changes over time - Comparison report showing differences between two systems - Patch analysis reports for Tru64 UNIX and OpenVMS - Hardware revision analysis report for ES40 systems ***Service Cockpit*** The WEBES suite of diagnostic tools are also available via the Compaq Service Cockpit. Service Cockpit acts as the control center for a wide range of standards-based service and maintenance applications for distributed computing environments. Service Cockpit takes advantage of browser technology to consolidate the applications, making everything available through one familiar interface. The Service Cockpit client is a separate kit, available for Intel-based Windows 95/98, Windows NT, and Windows 2000 platforms. ========================================================================= Copyright 1999 Compaq Computer Corporation Compaq and the Compaq logo Registered in U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
